How to strengthen your positioning at work in these volatile economic times?
Despite layoffs in the Indian economy, reports have revealed an increased intent by organizations to hire skilled and specialized professionals. Despite talk of a looming recession, the labour pool remains shallow rather than deep for many organizations; especially those looking to hire skilled and specialized workers. While some organizations are freezing hiring, others are 'quiet hiring' which is when organizations respond to hiring challenges by re-redeploying and upskilling existing employees, in an effort to achieve high priority tasks without onboarding new talent.
It is a time to actually let your employer understand your worth and the value of your work you bring to the organization. For starters, let’s see how we can begin our journey of creating a strong positioning at the workplace. It is never too late to begin.
Step 1: Create and build your authority
If I ask you today, “What is your authority at work? What are you exceptionally good at?” If you are fumbling or finding it difficult to pinpoint, know that it is very normal for many women to feel this way. Building an authority is generally seen as a ‘male’ trait. And hence we keep ignoring it most of the time because of this belief system of what men and women are supposed to build at work.
You not being able to answer this question does not mean you do not have an authority, it just shows that you are not able to articulate it.
Contemplation: Which is that high level of knowledge or great level of skill in you which people around you see, need and want? How can you build authority in this skill?
Step 2: Going beyond the everyday and everyone
When I joined the workforce, my quest was always about owning my uniqueness and making it my biggest ally. Learn more about how to be comfortable being different here.
I can read and feel energy, so as an HR it was my unfair advantage as I could understand and feel what was unsaid in words. I could then lead conversations to bring the unsaid out. Peers and bosses started calling me ‘The HR with the hawk eye’. I did not shy away from going beyond the everyday tools and techniques and what everyone else was doing. You can do it too.

Step 3: Showcasing your authority
We women find it quite difficult to showcase our talents, achievements and capabilities. It does not come naturally to us. We tend to be our own worst critics and downsize our successes. The first step in showcasing your authority comes from the ease with which you receive compliments. That is your litmus test. If you feel uneasy doing so, you know you need to work through this uneasiness of talking about your achievements and owning your achievements with responsibility and pride.
Contemplation: Make a list of your achievements and use these tips to present it in an impactful way -
Try using the 'Challenge, Action, Result' format - Every accomplishment should include the problem or challenge, the action you took, and the result of your work. When answering these questions, think in terms of money, numbers and time.
If possible, quantify your achievements with figures, percentages and statistics. If you can’t quantify them, describe a qualitative achievement.
Ask yourself, “If I do not showcase my work, how will anyone know the value of my work?”
"Which room should I go today and talk about my work achievements?"
