How your always alert nervous system is STOPPING you from unleashing your truest potential?

How your always alert nervous system is STOPPING you from unleashing your truest potential?

Bring your attention to your shoulders. If you feel difficult focusing on your shoulders. Close your eyes and take one nice deep breath and now bring your attention to your shoulders.

If you find your shoulders tight and rigid, make conscious effort to loosen and relax your shoulders.

The majority of women have tense or stiff shoulders. Why is that so?

It is because our nervous system is mostly alert and in a survival mode of fight, flight or freeze. This comes from the memories stored in our DNA since our tribal days as a woman where we were dependent on someone else to keep us safe. The fight-flight-freeze response is a type of stress response that helps you to react to perceived threats. It is a survival instinct that our ancient ancestors developed many years ago.

Now ask yourself, “If my brain and nervous system is always so alert in this survival mode, at what percent of my capability, skills and gift am I operating at everyday at work?

To be honest, the answer is not even 60% of who you are and what you are capable. My gifts lie in seeing those uncovered gifts of yours, what you are capable of and bringing that wisdom to you.

The first step you can do to start realizing your true potential is learning to relax your nervous system. I am keeping it very simple in this newsletter enlisting ways in which you can start cultivating a practice to relax your nervous system.

  1. Deep Breathing
I cannot emphasize the importance of our breath in bringing us to oneness with our truest nature - calm and at peace. If you start practicing 10 deep breaths 3 times a day, you will start noticing the stark difference on how you respond rather react to your surroundings. You will also notice how your energy level is up and the improvement in your focusing power.

  2. Notice Your Nervous System Patterns
Being aware when your nervous system is triggered is the key to create the balance. Try and remember which are some incidents or moments which cause you to trigger the fight-flight-freeze response? When does your heart rate go up and you feel a little jittery? Start mapping your nervous system patterns with the triggers. This will help you to create a system for better regulating your nervous sytem then.

  3. Acceptance
Accepting the sensations of the fight or flight response as normal can go a long way towards reducing them. Worrying about your fight-or-flight response while it is happening sends more signals to the brain that you are in danger, with the result of increasing or prolonging the response. This can be seen in the case of panic attacks, where people think their panic attack will harm them, and as a result, the attack continues. Perhaps counterintuitively, accepting the sensations of the fight-or-flight response as normal can go a long way towards reducing them.

  4. Exercise
Exercise betters our resilience and helps in regulating our nervous system. I understand that exercise takes a lot of effort and motivation for many including me. I did not enjoy exercise at all. What worked was starting with movement which I felt was enjoyable. So pick a movement which you enjoy, mix and match and ensure you bring exercise in its most fun part to start with.

  5. Mindfulness
Asking yourself if you are in this moment goes a long way. Bringing your awareness to the now whenever you feel moving into the past or flying into the future is what needs to be practiced. Taking a pause, closing your eyes and telling your mind and body that you are safe in this moment does wonders.
