If you feel men are better at your role, read this!
For many of us, we have this gender inhibitor thinking men are better at our roles. Especailly for roles which have been primarily done by men.
If you feel men are better at your role, read this!
A female anaesthesiologist who is a 1:1 mentoring client of mine, sent me this message. She was losing confidence in the basic procedures post her maternity leave and this belief was coming to surface.
So here is the thing. If you look at anaesthesiologist history, you will see mostly men. Very few women entered this field because historically it has been a demanding job. If you try to look at female role models, you will find very few. It is but natural for majority of the women to feel the way my client was feeling.
Also someone at the hospital was making inappropriate comments about her capability which was not helping at all.
If you are sailing in the same boat, here is what we did. So that you can start your journey too in breaking the belief system:
🔺Asked her to make a list of qualities of a good anesthesiologist.
🔺 Next is the crux. I asked her to write M or W in front of these qualities depending on whether she thought men (M) or women (W) are inherently better at it.
🔺It was interesting to note the pattern that the qualities she thought she lacked, she marked as M.
To evidence her brain, I showed her research which says otherwise. To start making holes in her belief system.
🔺One attribute which came in as a strong point for men is that they can stay calm in the most critical patient scenario.
Now here is the thing, our patriarchal society has built men DNAs in such a way that their entire focus is on their job. That was the only thing they were supposed to do. (This is changing now, but we have a long way to go).
Unlike a woman, whose system is so filled with stress from various areas of life. Nourishing everyone, birthing, caretaker responsibilities alongwith work pressures.
So in any given situation on a normal day, a woman is going to be more stressful than a man.
Bringing this fact to light, made her shoulders droop. And let go of the baggage.
🔺We made a tool box for her to start becoming calmer in operation theatres. Rituals and practices to be done in less than 5 minutes.
🔺 And lastly ended the call with accessing the subconscious with a guided meditation, where I took her to a past space where she had aced the particular procedure. And brought that energy to her entire system. The energy of confidence + competence + softness + grace. Also evidencing to her brain that if she has done it once, she can do it again. Again, again and again.
That did it.
She herself concluded the call with why there are few female anesthesiologists and how it had nothing to do with skills.
I received a call from her the very next day saying she could do the procedure in the first go. That she had the noises inside, but her heart overrun the noises. Deep inside something had shifted. The belief system was feeling weak and a new confidence was building in.
You see that is the whole reason, I keep on reiterating we humans are magic.
Wisdom lives in your body and mind and are always signalling messages to YOU.
This is your invitation to start listening to the signals inside of you. They are your guide, wisdom, and absolute meter of what is happening inside you. When you can listen to that, you can radically transform your life. There will then be congruence because you are attuned to yourSELF.
