How does Strategic Thinking look and feel for Women Leaders

I facilitated Unveiling the Patterns of Successful Women Leaders last week, and one thing which came up during the listing your fears section was this theme of women thinking they are not strategic thinkers. And hence they cannot be good leaders.

Let me dissect this belief for all of you today. As I feel this might be a common limiting belief many women have.

Now, let us first define what strategic thinking really means?
Strategic thinking is simply an intentional and rational thought process that focuses on the analysis of critical factors and variables that will influence the long-term success of a business, a team, or an individual.

Did you notice the word ‘simply’? It is indeed that easy and simple.

Strategic thinking has been promoted as something which men do together crunching difficult numbers or brainstorming intensely to solve a problem. To be honest, strategic thinking is just an aspect of leadership not the everything.

Strategic thinking for women is made up using these 4 elements to make a decision -

Intuition
Strategic thinking will look at the numbers in black and white to decide. We as women go beyond this and use our intuition to decide. We see beyond the listed. We tune into beyond the obvious. Our decisions are better than strategic thinking when coupled with intuition.

Risk Taking
Strategic thinking minus the risk taking may not lead to sound decisions always. Taking risks is easier for us when we see and listen to what is said and what is not said. Start practising this skill.

Creativity
We as women create and nourish life inside us. Imagine the kind of creativity and innovation we hold. Use this creativity to think out of the box and bring solutions which only strategic thinking cannot bring.

Looking at the whole picture
Being naturally empathetic we tune into the emotions and feelings of others. We also look at the whole picture considering things which a strategic thinker may leave out. We believe in holistic approaches. That enables us to take better decisions.

There, we dissected this limiting belief for all of us to realize that the weightage which we are giving to this one skill is unnecessary. The hype which this skill has created is just another bubble. We just popped it for your brain to have the evidence it needs to transform this limiting belief.

Next time when you think of strategic thinking, create this visual in front of you where women are sipping their favourite drink and crunching numbers coupled with intuition, feeling emotions of the involved, are ready to take the risk because they can foresee the whole picture. And all the while smiling at how incredible they are as a leader!
